- Yes, backstage volunteers will be able to watch your dancer(s) perform from the side-stage.
- Please contact Jenica at the studio, jenica@danceinsisters.com, or 503-780-4947.
VIDEO will be recorded for both performances and all numbers put into one recording. USB or DVD are available for $30 each and will be ready to be picked up from the studio in January when we return from the break. Pre-order here.
PHOTOS will be taken during rehearsal and performances and will be available for purchase a couple of weeks after the recital.
Dancer Check-In / Check-Out
Dancers should arrive with stage-ready costume, hair, makeup for their first dance (except for lipstick, which can be applied right before dancers go on stage). See Class Details section for more info.
Check-In is down the hallway, to the right of the auditorium.
3-10 years: parent/guardians need to sign in dancers. You will receive a sticker with your dancer’s name on it. This becomes your “ticket” to enter backstage to pick up your child at the end of the recital. For the safety of our dancers, only ONE adult per dancer/family — the one with the name sticker(s) — may go back to the choir/band rooms.
11+ years: Dancers do not need a parent for check-in, but must sign in.
Once checked in, dancers must remain in the choir or band room. They cannot leave to enter the Commons during intermission. The only exception is our 3-6 year old dancers, or those who have made arrangements ahead of time, who may be picked up at the beginning of intermission.
Family Members & Friends
APPLAUSE: Enthusiastic applause and cheering is encouraged — but it is not appropriate to yell a child’s name.
AUDITORIUM: please refrain from entering and exiting during the performance. It is very distracting to the performers and to the audience. If urgent, ushers will allow doors to open between numbers. No eating, drinking, or tabacco allowed in the auditorium.
BACKSTAGE: Friends and family members are not permitted backstage or in the dressing rooms before, during, or after the recital, including intermission. There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space, and the dressing rooms are private areas. Please meet dancers in the Commons after the recital.

Participation is MANDATORY. Dancers rehearse on the large performance stage where all lighting, music cues, entrance/exits, and choreography spacing are set and finalized. It helps dancers feel confident and ready to perform in front of an audience, which is critical to having an enjoyable, successful performance.
TIME: Arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled stage time. See posted schedules by time and by age/class.
WHAT TO WEAR / COSTUME CHANGES:
– Arrive in the first costume with stage-ready hair and makeup…except for lipstick, which can be applied right before they perform.
– If needed, the hallway bathrooms are available for changing as needed. Please do not use the backstage rooms.
– We also recommend wearing a nude leotard under costumes for ease of changing costumes.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
– Please sit in the assigned row until your dancer’s class is called to line up.
– Dancers MUST remain in the auditorium unless changing or eating a quick snack in the Commons area.
– No food or beverages are allowed in the auditorium except for water bottles.
– Ages 3-11 need to have a chaperone. A chaperone is not required for ages 12+.
Costume, Hair, Makeup Details
Label Everything. Write your child’s name on ALL AND EACH costume pieces, shoes, accessories, tights, etc and place them in a labeled garment bag. Place accessories in a labeled clear ziploc bag.
COSTUME CARE: Take special care of costumes and make sure they are free of wrinkles. Do not wash or use a traditional iron because the materials can shrink, burn, melt, or change color. Please use only a steam iron, hand held steamer, or hang in the bathroom during a shower.
TULLE SKIRTS: Grasp the waist and give a gentle shake, then use your fingers to “comb” out any pieces of tulle that are wrinkled. Store on a hanger upside down. Use a hand-held steamer or hang in the bathroom during a shower.
SHOES: Jazz: black; Ballet: pink; Tap: black; Contemporary: nude half-soles; Hip Hop: check details
PONYTAIL (slicked back)
Spray bottle with water, gel, brush or comb, soft-bristle brush (creates a very smooth finish), elastic hair ties, and hairspray
- Tutorial for slicked-back ponytail with middle part: Video
CLASSIC BALLET BUN (slicked back)
Lonnie prefers a “classic ballet bun,” which should lay relatively flat against the head. Use a hairnet and bobby pins, without a bun-maker/donut. The bun-makers create too much bulk that sticks out too far from the head. Tutorials are included below and/or check with Jenica in the front office with any questions.
Spray bottle with water, gel, brush or comb, soft-bristle brush, bobby pins and/or u-pin hairpins to match hair color, hair net to match hair color, and hairspray
Jewelry: No jewelry, except for small diamond studs if ears are pierced.
WHY MAKEUP FOR KIDS?
The intention is not to make your child look older, but rather to enhance your child’s features so they are clearly seen from the stage and not washed-out by the stage lights. This is true for both boys and girls. Here is a great article!
TIPS TO PREVENT LIPSTICK SMUDGING
- Cover the entire lip with a lipliner pencil in a color that is similar to the lipstick.
- Dab the lipstick overtop (matte options work better than glossy)
- Blot lipstick with tissue.
- Press a light application of translucent powder or finishing powder overtop. Or, spritz with setting spray.
STAGE MAKEUP TUTORIAL
Video: Smokey Eye Dance Makeup Tutorial
- Foundation: Select a skin-tone color. No need to go darker than usual.
- Blush: Applied on the cheekbones, heavier than everyday wear to counteract the one-dimensional effects of the foundation.
- Bronzer and Contouring: Can help define facial features, but it is a personal preference. There are many youtube tutorials on this.
- Finishing Powder or Setting Spray: Creates a matte finish to reduce shine that reflects light and causes shadows.
- Eyeshadow: Use a neutral palette (e.g. grays, browns) that works with your skin tone, but apply much heavier than everyday wear. Begin with a lighter neutral color (e.g. light gray) across the entire eye lid. Apply a darker shade (e.g. dark gray) across the eye socket. Use a very light or white shade under the eyebrow to highlight.
- Eyeliner: Black with a slight extended wing.
- Mascara: Black, waterproof to prevent smudging and flaking.
- Lip liner & Lipstick: Select a bright red color that works well with skin tone. A long-wear matte works best. Glossy lipsticks tend to smear!!!

Pro tip: use lip liner over entire lip, dab lipstick, dust with translucent setting powder)
